WHERE IS SANTORINI?
🩵 Santorini is part of the Cyclades group of Greek islands, located in the southern Aegean Sea, southeast of mainland Greece.
This crescent-shaped island was formed by a massive volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, which created its dramatic caldera and steep cliffs that now attract visitors from all over the world. Santorini’s main towns—Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli—perch atop these cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea. The island is insanely romantic, making it a top destination for honeymooners.
WHEN TO VISIT SANTORINI:
☀️ When to go: Santorini’s season starts in March and ends at the beginning of November. Many restaurants and shops close during winter so you want to avoid visiting at that time. July-August can get incredibly hot and crowded, so I recommend visiting in shoulder season when weather is still warm enough to swim. Good months to go are May-June, September-October.
HOW TO GET TO SANTORINI:
✈️ How to book flights to Santorini:
Santorini has an airport: JTR.
During summer months, there are direct flights to Santorini from various European cities such as Paris, London, Prague, Amsterdam, Milan, Rome, Frankfurt to name a few.
Use flight comparison tools to determine whether booking a flight to Santorini directly from your home airport (with a stop in a major European city) is more affordable, or if it’s cheaper to book the lowest-cost flight to a European hub and then arrange a separate budget airline flight to Santorini. For our trip, we booked a single flight from Washington, D.C. (IAD) to Santorini on Air France with a short layover in Paris, which worked out to be the best option.
You can alternatively fly to Athens (ATH) and take a short 45 minute domestic flight.
⛴️ How to take a ferry to Santorini:
Athinios Port
The main ferry port, also known as the New Port or Thira Port, is located on the west side of the island. It’s the primary entry point for travelers arriving by sea. Ferries from mainland Greece and other Cycladic islands arrive and depart from Athinios.
Ferries run from Piraeus Port (Athens) or other Cycladic islands to Santorini. The ferry option (Blue Star) from Athens takes about 8 hours, and the faster ferry (Seajets) takes 5 hours. My favorite ferry booking site is ferryhopper.
HOW TO GET TO OIA (From the airport or the port):
There are several options on how to get to Oia once you arrive at the airport or the port.
🚖 Private transfers: Most expensive, but easy and convenient. You can arrange this online, or through your hotel. For reference, our transfer between the hotel in Oia and the port was 50 euros.
🚕 Taxi: There are very few taxis on the island, and are not reliable. They are also expensive, and you may have to wait a long time in line. With costs being comparable to pre-arranged transfers above, I’d opt for pre-arranging a transfer.
🚌 Bus: There are buses from the airport or port to Fira (Thira), the capital of Santorini. If you are staying in Oia or elsewhere on the island, you’ll have to transfer in Fira. This is the cheapest option €1.80 each leg, but luggage space may be limited and the buses only operate during the day. You may have to wait to get on the bus, or while transferring in Fira.
🚗 Rental car: You can hire a car but know that the roads in Santorini are not the easiest to drive. Most cars are manual transmission so if you need an automatic, reserve in advance. If you are arriving by ferry, you can pick up the car at the port but it is very busy and hectic, and you have to drive up the narrow lanes on the caldera cliff so it may be a good idea to take taxi or bus to Fira and pick up a car there.
I reserved a hotel through Booking.com, and the reservation included a free private transfer to the hotel from the airport. Look to see if this is an option on your accommodation booking.
HOW TO GET AROUND IN OIA:
While you can drive in other parts of Santorini, Oia is primarily a pedestrian-friendly village, and driving within its narrow streets is not recommended. Instead, bring a comfortable pair of sandals or walking shoes, as you’ll be exploring Oia on foot. Keep in mind that the cobblestone paths can get quite slippery—both John and I nearly slipped a few times—so opt for footwear with good grip to ensure a safe and enjoyable stroll through this picturesque village!
WHERE TO STAY IN OIA:
Given that everything in Oia is pretty much walkable, you’ll be close to attractions no matter where you stay within the village. There are options for every budget, but keep in mind that Oia is the most picturesque and famous part of Santorini, so accommodations here tend to be more expensive compared to other areas like Fira, Imerovigli, or Kamari. However, staying in Oia offers unique advantages:
- Enjoy Quieter Mornings and Evenings: After the day-trippers and cruise ship visitors leave, Oia transforms into a peaceful haven. You’ll have the cobblestone streets and breathtaking views almost to yourself.
- No Rushing After Sunset: Oia is world-renowned for its sunsets, and staying here means you can savor the experience without worrying about catching a bus or taxi back to your hotel in another town.
For a truly unforgettable Santorini experience, I highly recommend splurging on accommodations in Oia. The serene atmosphere, stunning views, and convenience make it well worth the investment!

10 BEST THINGS TO DO IN OIA:
1. 💙 Blue domes
The iconic blue-domed churches of Santorini are a must-see, with the most famous ones in Oia belonging ot the churches of Agios Spiridonas and Agios Anastasia. These blue domes against the backdrop of whitewashed buildings and the azure Aegean Sea are some of the most photographed spots on the island.
It is important to note is that although you might have seen photos of people on the rooftops of these gorgeous churches, it is both disrespectful and not allowed. There are also “Do not enter” signs marking private properties off, and we saw a lot of people ignoring these signs as well. Please don’t climb the roofs, and follow the signs.
💙💙💙 Photo spot for the Three Blue Domes in Oia
To get to this photo spot, search “3 Domes Viewpoint” on Google Maps. There is always a line for photos here, so be prepared to wait. I got here around 8:20 am in August and waited about 20 minutes. The earlier you go, the less you’ll be waiting. By the time we left, the line had grown much longer.

2. 🐙 Amoudi Bay
Amoudi Bay, or Ammoudi Bay – located at the base of Oia, offering crystal-clear waters and charming fish taverns. It’s the perfect spot for fresh seafood and a tranquil escape from the bustling streets above.
It is about 300 steps down to get here from the main part of Oia. However, the views while going up or down are spectacular, so it is definitely worth the effort. There are donkey rides available but I do not recommend this. Do watch out for donkey poo on the stairs!
The restaurants at the bay feature waterfront dining, and are super popular. We didn’t have a booking so we had to wait about an hour for a non-waterfront seat. Make sure to reserve ahead especially for dinner times.
Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna, Ammoudi Fish Tavern and Sunset Ammoudi Taverna are all highly recommended!
3. 🧡 Kastro Oia Houses & Restaurant
While the rest of Santorini is all about the blue and white, the rust-colored buildings of Kastro Oia stand out beautifully against the iconic whitewashed background of Santorini. This spot is perfect for capturing unique photos or enjoying a memorable dining experience with panoramic views.
The stairs in the photo are part of the public pathway and offer a fantastic spot for capturing stunning photos.
4. 🛥️ Boat tour around the island
A boat tour around Santorini offers a unique and unforgettable perspective of the island’s stunning beauty.
You’ll get breathtaking views of the caldera, swim in the serene cerulean waters, and visit famous spots like the Red Beach and White Beach. Some even include swimming in the volcanic hot springs.
With a variety of options available, you can choose the perfect tour based on your preferences, including food offerings, drink selections, sunset timing, and group sizes—from intimate small groups to larger, more social gatherings. Here are some of the most highly reviewed options to consider:
I personally prefer smaller groups for a quieter, more relaxed vibe.
Tip: Bring sunscreen!
5. ⛪ Church of Panagia Platsani
Located in Oia’s bustling main square, the Church of Panagia Platsani is a beautiful and iconic site. Its striking bell tower with six bells is a landmark that stands out in the village. Whether you’re admiring its architecture or visiting for a peaceful moment, it’s a must-see while exploring Oia.
6. 🏰 Oia Castle (Byzantine Castle of Agios Nikolaos)
Oia Castle, also known as the Byzantine Castle of Agios Nikolaos, is the most famous sunset spot in Santorini. From here, visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the spectacular island sunset. It’s the most popular location to watch the sun dip below the horizon.
The views from here are absolutely incredible, and this spot is a must in Santorini.
7. 🧿 Streets of Oia
The narrow cobblestone streets of Oia are lined with charming boutiques, artisan shops, and local stores. A stroll through these picturesque lanes is a delightful experience, offering a chance to pick up unique souvenirs and immerse yourself in the village’s distinctive charm.
The streets of Oia can get quite crowded during the daytime, making it less enjoyable to navigate through the mass of visitors. However, this is why staying in Oia is recommended as it allows you to experience the village at its quietest—early mornings, just as the shops begin to open. This is the perfect time to stroll through the charming streets and enjoy the beauty of Oia without the crowds.
8. ✴️ Oia Windmills
The Oia windmills, a historic symbol of Santorini, were once used for milling flour. While only a few remain today, they still offer a glimpse into the island’s past. These traditional structures, perched on the cliffs, make for a picturesque spot and an excellent photo opportunity.
9. 🌅 Watch a Sunset
Watching the sunset in Oia is a bucket-list experience for many travelers like myself. Santorini is famous for its spectacular sunsets, and Oia is one of the best places to witness this natural spectacle. As the sun sets over the caldera, the sky is filled with vibrant hues, creating a magical atmosphere.
There are many spots to choose from, and remember that the popular places get very packed so you want to arrive early. Consider these spots:
- Oia Castle
- Amoudi Bay
- Oia Windmills
- Book a restaurant with sunset views
- Book a hotel with sunset views
- A boat tour with sunset views
10. ⛪ Agios Georgios Church
The Agios Georgios Church is a beautiful yellow chapel at the edge of Oia, is surrounded by tall cypress trees. This quiet church offers a serene escape from the bustling village.
Our hotel was located near this church, which is how we stumbled upon it on our way to the main streets of Oia. The yellow color is unique as most other churches were white.
WHERE TO EAT IN OIA
Pitogyros – one of the few budget-friendly eateries in Oia, serving up delicious and authentic gyros. It’s a must-try for those seeking a quick, affordable, and tasty meal in the heart of the village. Perfect for refueling after a day of exploring.
Lycabettus Restaurant – fine dining set on a clifftop terrace with incredible sunset views. Located at the Andronis Luxury Suites.
Sunset Amoudi – one of the seafood restaurants in Amoudi Bay. Reservations recommended for dinner time.
Ammoudi Fish Tavern – another Amoudi Bay restaurant serving fresh seafood by the water.
Lauda Restaurant – Oia’s first restaurant, serving fine dining using local ingredients. Located at the Andronis Boutique Hotel.
Lolita’s Gelato – amazing gelato place. We had it every night because it was so good!
Elinikon – views of sunset and the windmills.
Karma – highly recommend for authentic Greek dishes, and the patio atmosphere is so charming.
Thalami – indoor and outdoor spaces, views of the caldera.
CONCLUSION
I hope I’ve inspired you to visit Oia, Santorini, one of the most romantic and beautiful places I’ve been to. With this list of things to do, hotel recommendations and restaurants, navigating through your Oia Santorini trip should be a breeze.
